Gee, 500 Water Street Jacksonville. That sounds familiar from somewhere......
How long has it been since the Falls Road was torn out between Rochester and Brockport? I'm guessing 30 years at least. Now a bridge over the old ROW needs repair and Senator Schumer has taken up the cause. Another question - who owns the ROW under the bridge now? https://13wham.com/news/local/local...
In deep snow the train can be almost like a sled. The brakes may be on but either there is enough ice between the brake shoes and wheels that they are ineffective, or the wheels may be sliding on icy rails even though they are not turning.
My apologies to member "hxa", who DID post a rulebook in its entirely. I missed that, looks like we're over 70 replies so far. Therein, Rule 51 on Page 43 does allow for pushing a disabled train, as quoted here by "justalurker66". I have some demands on my time approaching and I ...
Look, I don't know it all and never claimed I did. But I DID have over 40 years in railroading, I have operated trains, have taken more rulebook tests than I can remember, have helped write rulebooks and have worked under NORAC, GCOR, and various other rules on both large and small railroads. And to...
So, according to the rules, the operator at the front of the train is supposed to control the brakes. But that was not possible due to them being disabled. The rear operator obviously was unaware that the radio was out. Even though he should have been aware, I don't think the rear operator was negl...
Sir - I was drawn to the thread after seeing headlines and figuring this forum might have better info than the various news media. I stayed aboard as it seemed there are some similarities, as well as differences, between this incident and the type of railroading I am familiar with. I have the deepes...
Well 16 years after the start of the thread, and 12 years after the last post, I will add two more to the list. And since I have orders from the bride to clear out at least SOME of the basement, I'll offer them for sale right here. $25/both includes shipping. OHIO TROLLEY TRAILS Volume 1 by Harry Ch...
Thanks hxa, that's informative!
Oh I dare say a very thick book could be written on the various cases, decisions and reversals over the years, and the creative ways used to try to overturn various outcomes. With some, you can only shake your head. And yes, sometimes things which seemed to be long settled are exhumed for a fresh ro...
No, and I bet the rules & procedures did not account for radio comms cutting out in the middle of the move. I bet the operator was screaming his head off to stop the damn train. Does anybody have access to the rulebook which would apply here? I can only speak on how it's done on "regular&q...
I'm sure the Board WILL get it right. But unless things have changed, the company hearings ("Investigation" was the term I'm familiar with, but no doubt there are other terms as well) are held much sooner than the fed's determination. Those who may be held out of service pending a hearing ...
re: the failure or lack of radio communication. My guess is that either one radio failed or the other, OR the train op didn't realize his volume was turned down too low to hear or he didn't realize the radio was turned off. Or maybe it was set on the wrong channel which I know from personal experie...
Exactly! The disable train should have had the full right of way and had been put onto a clear track before any other trains got in the way. This would of prevented the accident. "Got in the way"?? The other train didn't "get in the way", the disabled train was where it had no r...
