Re: Norfolk, VA NorthEast Regional Service

I think the assertion that Amtrak is simply not competitive in the BOS-PHL market may deserve a little more scrutiny. Now that US has jacked air travel sky high, I'm sure that they'll do a good-enough job at capturing business travel, and they'll be happy for bus and Amtrak to pick up the price-sen...

If business travelers really were being that loyal to US Air then why did US Air lower their fares when SWA came into the market? gokeefe, I don't know how much you follow airline practices, but this is absolutely standard practice when a new low-cost entrant starts flying a route that was previous...

Southwest's loads were low on PHL-BOS, mainly due to business traveler loyalty to US Air. I don't think Amtrak is a significant player in the PHL-BOS market. Southwest is not strong player in either Boston or Philly (US Air hub), and I think they simply got beat by the incumbent airline on the route...

Look, even if SouthernRailway's times represent a best case scenario, I'd say adding an additional 40-60 minutes for traveling to LGA and getting through security does not change the argument one iota.

Why would you hope that it never gets built? Boston is connected to most of its other satellite industrial cities by rail -- Lynn, Salem, Gloucester, Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell, Waltham, Leominster, Fitchburg, Worcester, Providence, Brockton. I don't see a good reason why Taunton, Fall River, and ...

The extra speed matters, as I'm connecting to NJT at NYP. This is another big misunderstanding by most riders. The Acelas don't have a shorter running time simply due to speed, but more so becuase of less stops. The biggest example of this is during winter months when we operate under the "Sno...

The Acela is certainly drawing a crowd, and I'm one. I've been traveling from BOS to central NJ on business regularly this year and the Acela is always my choice: The extra speed matters, as I'm connecting to NJT at NYP. The WiFi matters more; I (and a lot of others) can work, provided the train is...

Three trains a day that go from Boston to the PVD airport, all during the evening rush?

This doesn't seem like useful service for airport customers (fine for long-distance commuters, perhaps...)

I really can't believe people are defending the T employee here. I know it's normal to defend those who are your "side" in these types of debates, but I don't see any other conclusion than she completely overreacted. Sure, the guy taking the photo was probably an ass and was likely drunk, ...

Sad to say, but I guess in this case the NIMBY's were right; this line was not wanted. If I lived on the South Shore, there's no way I would be able to tolerate such infrequent or such slow service. I bet most Hingham riders just drive to Braintree anyway, so they don't have to rely on such infreque...

I see three issues with the train. First, there was already South Shore ferry service. Many of the train riders are former ferry riders. Second, this is a slow line with infrequent service. If you start work at 9 AM, you really only have one choice of train. The train is not time-competitive with of...

I'm thinking the value of this proposal is not that it will actually get built, but that it gives a cost comparison vs. improving the existing corridor. Not that the money is there, but you don't, for example, want to plan to spend $200b on the existing corridor, if a whole new ROW is going to cost ...

While I think improving trip time is important, the dollars to minutes conversion seems pretty poor. If they are looking for a way to spend a few billion to improve ridership, why don't they make trains longer and cut fares. I guarantee that if you could get from BOS-NYP on the train for $20, long ...
