Legislation that targets the use of fraudulent tickets on the Virginia Railway Express passed the state Senate unanimously Tuesday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Linda T. "Toddy" Puller (D-Fairfax), makes it illegal for people to produce and use a fraudulent or counterfeit ticket on the commuter train service. Violators of the law could be fined $500 to $1,000.

VRE officials had also introduced another bill in the General Assembly, but it was defeated 55 to 43 on the House of Delegates floor Tuesday, thanks to the republicans

Why in the devil would you vote against making it illegal to try and beat a train on foot. We should take everyone that voted against the bill and force them to run back and forth across the tracks while a train is bearing down on them to give them a sense of perspective on how stupid such a move is.

Or, you could simply state that in such a case, the engineer and railroad are not liable and need not stop... That should take care of the problem in fairly short order, one way or another.
