Something I've always wondered about was were those FA's ever used on the LIRR as a locomoitive, or was it always soley as a cab car/HEP plant?

Love the pictures, although I dont recall ever seeing that paint scheme, seeing those FA's does bring back memories.

Always as a power pack, AFAIK.

The FAs were only used as HEP & cab cars.

They were used only as powerpacks, but up til about 1981-82 most still had the 244's inside, and they sounded neat. The were set at kind of a high notch, perhaps 5th? They did not sound very much like the C420's or RS3's, but of course they did not sound like EMD's at all. Generally, they smoked noticably, but not the big black clouds Alco's are famous for.
