I was in Grand Central this morning and saw a pair of M1s, ( I think), # 8102 and 8103. Both had a sticker near the B end of the cars that said "Owned by the Port Authority Of NY & NJ, Leased to the Metropolitian Transportation Authority." Was this done before the formation of Metro North in order to get additional funding to purchase the cars, when Conrail was providing the commuter service to the State? Who actually owns theses cars now, or does Metro North have to make lease payments on them still?

The cars you mentioned in 8000 to 8124 series are M3a's. All cars are financed trough bond issues, even the M7a's, underwriten by Port Authority of New York & NJ for both LIRR and MNCR.
Depending on how much of bond is paid back ???ownewrship is somewere beteen financed and paid off :D
