This Guardian article says that passengers are choosing rail over air between London and Manchester now that the West Coast Modernisation is at last finished. Times between London and Manchester are now down to 126 minutes for the fastest trains - the tilting Pendolinos.

This is similar to the shift that has occurred on the Eurostar routes where air has lost ground on the London-Paris/Brussels routes.
