Announced Tuesday.... Layoffs up to 1000... The rail impact of this is a reduction of the all-rail iron shipments from Keetac and Minntac up in the Minnesota Iron Range.

Tuesday morning, an email sent out to employees by Scott Buckiso, senior vice president and Manufacturing officer for U.S. Steel, confirmed the layoffs.

“As you are well aware, we temporarily idled steelmaking at this facility in September,” it stated. “Because we can meet customer demand by leveraging our active iron and steelmaking facilities, we have made the decision to indefinitely idle Granite City’s primary operations.
Yet another huge employment loss for organized labor in Illinois (a closed-shop state), and probably not coincidentally, it comes just as an expanded facility is about to come online in Arkansas (a right-to-work state).
