In New Jersey, $59.13 million will go toward replacement of a 122-year-old swing bridge over the Passaic River between Newark and Kearny used by Conrail shared assets freight trains, said Amit Bose, Federal Railroad Administration administrator.
NJ Transit, Amtrak and PATH commuters will benefit because freight trains won’t be detoured 12 miles on the Northeast Corridor Line when there are problems closing the old bridge, FRA officials said.
Currently, it can take five hours to close the old bridge that serves Conrail’s Passaic and Harsimus line, which connects to the port. The rebuild cuts that down to 12 minutes. Conrail will provide a 20% match of the federal funding amount.
