KINGSTON, R.I. — No injuries were reported after an Amtrak Northeast Regional train struck track equipment near Kingston on Friday night, according to news reports.

WJAR-TV reports Washington-Boston train No. 178, carrying about 200 passengers, struck the equipment about 11:20 p.m. The station’s website has a photograph of an Amfleet coach immediately behind ACS64 locomotive No. 645 with damage to its front end and a gash extending several feet across a door and down the car’s side.

I wonder how close to Kingston the train was, guessing not that close since the train stops at Kingston and that gash appears to be from a high speed. Glad no one was hurt.

The gash on the first car was on the right side of the train. So, the train was traveling left main? How did the motor not get hit? is it possible that loads shifted just as train passed? Or does motor's clearances narrow than the Am fleet?

A little bit of additional information - train 178 was operating on TK 1 when it passed the work train on TK 2 at
Davisville, RI. WE still don't know what was protruding from the cars on the work train that made contact with
178's cars, or if 178 was operating at timetable speed (125 MPH) or reduced speed per a temporary speed bulletin.
