Happy to hear that close-in commuter rail is now covered by student passes. Wasn't the case when I was a student (many years ago, alas).

And once the Riverside Line is done, gotta assume the Red Line is next (as they already hinted at and withdrew). Lotta backed up issues on the northern end (like Alewife crossover, never-ending floating slabs, etc.).

Perfect timing.

All those coach buses east of the Mississippi contracted (commandeered?) to substitute for the Orange Line will be moved to the Green Line (Riverside) and then to the Red Line.

It has been covered for at least 9 years, based on when my kids started using the Needham Line to get to school.

I can't find anything about any impending shutdown of the Riverside line. What is your source?

There will still be shutdowns of the Orange Line, whether it be weekends and/or evenings it the future. Items that haven't been addressed, all be it on the next Governor's administration. The floating slab method of rail mounts on the southside, Tufts to Forest Hills, is deteriorated and will be the next big issue.

But the biggest issue is the Government Center Garage. As long as that project, not run by the MBTA but affecting the MBTA, is not finished there will be shutdowns.

Yes the 30 day shutdown may have taken care of some major issues, new signals, new interlocking/switching and so on, there is still others.

Reminds of the NYCT's Archer Line (also dating to the late 80s as the SW Corridor subway) needing a full roadbed rebuild after only 30 years.

It seems many late 60s-late 80s subway lines have needed major roadbed work for some reason. The CTA Dan
Ryan Line (built late 60s) also was fully rebuilt, in a five month shutdown in summer 2013.

Mods, can we rename this thread and keep it for all of these T rapid transit shutdowns? A lot of the discussion will be related.

It is an extraordinarily grim reality that this topic need broader scope, but be that as it may...

The withdrawn notice about a Red Line shutdown only relates to Alewife station. They need to fully replace a crossover there so they will shut Alewife down for a period and terminate trains at Davis.

Well, the Orange Line may be back, but I'm getting reports that it is excruciatingly slow, and people are reporting 20+ minute waits for trains. Does anyone know what is going on?
