They are not F40-2s. The only -2 that’s no longer active was wrecked in 1990.

Two MBB coaches stored at Davisville, R.U. are now up at auction for scrap. The 513 & 1516

The common word has been the frames and floors of the MBBs are rotting out - from the pictures of the two being auctioned it looks like they were checked for that, and from a visual perspective they actually look to be in quite good shape. Hell, they look better than the frame of a 2011 F150 I worked on!

Are the frames rotting out because they are in storage? Or is it a problem effecting the entire fleet and causing the retirement / Out Of Service status?
  by Backshophoss

Believe it's an internal structure design of the MBBs,along the lines of a stucture defect that took out a NYCTA subway car fleet(Bad under frames).
That structure is NOT repairable.

Can someone please help me with retirement and disposition dates for the following work engines? I'm trying to trace what happened to the former SEMTA diesel roster. Thanks in advance!

MBTA 901
MBTA 902
MBTA 903
MBTA 904
MBTA 905 (CNZR 905)

The 904 still lives on as work train power, Otto! Considering she is the oldest engine on the property, even when accounting for rebuilds, she is incredibly reliable.

902 is now at IRM...been up there since 2014 or 2015.

From what I can dig up on the internet; (so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this info)

MBTA 901 - Sold to GMRC. Forever sat on a dead line. Presumably scrapped for parts
MBTA 902 - Was operated by MBTA, had an electrical fire, sold to IRM.
MBTA 903 - Purchased as a parts unit, never operated for the MBTA.
MBTA 904 - Still in service
MBTA 905 (CNZR 905) - Most recent photo I saw was of it sitting on a siding with ex-MBTA 1922 in Connecticut. Presumably stashed there as a parts source

Why is the underframe not repairable? Just bolt or weld together some helper I-beams?

If it is an unsafe defect, why haven't the cars been condemned & removed immediately instead of being leased to CT?

Thank you.

When was 901 sold to GMRC?

When was 905 sold to CNZR?

MassDOT cherry picked Some of the MBBs that were in fair enough condition for possible Springfield-Greenfield commuter service.
Then got ConnDOT to foot the repair bill on those cars! :P
There 're cars being used for the MBTA ACSES Test train service that are barely useable for any passenger service.
Any MBB's still at Seaview yard are long outdated airbrake wise and were not setup for storage ,"put away wet"
had some form of structure issues found by MBCR employees, during the contractor change over period .
