Just imagine this scenario...
A drunk person gets off a train, and starts walking down the platform. The platform is an island platform (either at level or hi-level). When said drunk person reaches the end of the platform, they don't realize it, and walk right onto the active railway. Stumbling, over rails, ballast and ties. A train comes along, and, the story ends in a very bad way. Then comes along a lawyer. The lawyer makes the case that the drunk person was not aware of their surroundings, and since there was no sign telling them that the platform has ended, the casualty is due to NJT's negligence. A jury (sometimes not the brightest bulbs on the planet) awards a few million to the remaining family members.
