Hi all,

I remember seeing a while ago on Amtrak's site that you can track their trains via GPS to see their engine number and location. I specifically remember being able to look in the Northeast area for trains. I can't seem to find this page again. Did they take it down?

Thanks in advance.

Most of the loco fleet has a sat dome that can be used to get messages to and from the Lead Loco,
that system may be supplied by Qualcomm, as well as used for tracking while moving.
It is the same kind of system used by most of the major trucking companies to track,monintor,and
send/recieve messages to the entire fleet. While you can get direction and speed data from the Amtrak site,
you do not get the lead loco #.(At least on the public feed)
Believe only the Acela fleet,all active P-32's,40's and 42's have the domes,possibly the F-59's,and the 2 P32's
in the Amtk-Ca fleet as well,unknown if the NC state owned locos in Piedmont service are equipped or
the NPCU's have the domes.

There is also the Dixieland Software site:
http://dixielandsoftware.net/Amtrak/status/StatusMaps/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
which is "ugly" but may be faster and more information-dense, (depending on what you're looking for)
