Yesterday we're told that the LIRR would probably receive an FRA emergency order like Metro North got that will not allow a train to run without two people on the head end.

The Superintendent said an agreement was made with the utu to have a conductor ride with every engineer. He said some trains may have to be cancelled becuz ther arent enough conductors.

Probably be hiring again.

Swing are you a manager? This wasn't publicly announced yet and was to be kept quiet until it was announced. You spilled the beans. The BLE requested that if another person was to ride the engine that it would be an engineer and it was going to be, but the UTU insisted it was a conductor and that put the kabosh on that request.

Oops! I know the enginnerrs union was mad but the utu said it had to be this way. Just sayin they'll probably will be posting more asst conductors positions to fill the ranks.

Does it have to be a qualified guy on the head end? If so, hiring more A/C's won't help with this emergency order. Crew can barely cover conductor jobs on the weekends as it is.

No guarantee both crew members will not doze off at the same time (look up Go! flight 1002)

How about using a trained dog? If the engineer falls asleep, have the dog bark to wake the engineer up

This will be cheaper than permanently having a second crew member in the front cab

The railroad is asking the FRA if it can use unqualified collectors if a conductor is not available since they absoluteluy will not use engineers cause of the agreement with the utu.

Perhaps the LIRR can call this man to assist in training the dogs you speak of..

Will they be retrofitted in a LIRR conductor uniform?

Need to reject the second one from the left -- no legs

The K-9 unit is not subject to EEOC rules. If need be, the dog must be able to jump on the engineers lap in order to wake him or her up

I suppose it doesn't even matter. If it's an unqualified guy, he/she can take over the collecting duties while the conductor sits up front.

I'm seeing these orders come down from the FRA and is any one noting that the head of the FRA, Szabo, comes from the union side of the house, and sees this as an opportunity to get more bodies on the payroll and paying dues to his past employers? Just a thought.

That's quite a stretch, although the Metro North rules examiner did work with Szabo out in Chicagoland.

The latest twist is engineers are to be required to report fifteen minutes early, uncompensated for supervised calisthenics. Conductors will provide cadence based motivation for witch they will be issued megaphones. The suggested regimen should include jumping jacks, running in place and push ups. Conductors will be expected to chart progress and provide engineer fitness reports when contacting towers for orders and messages.

Will the engineers be issued "workout" attire? Are the conductors being compensated for operating megaphones?Cant they just use the trains pa system? Who will watch the dog during calisthenics?Where can i get an official lirr megaphone?

The expectation is conductors will gleefully preform this service free of charge. Yoga pants are on order but it will take a while to get some of the larger sizes.
