Guess you saw RS41, which runs earlier in the day. Lately NYAR has been showing up much more on Sundays, where normally freight is a snore on Sunday. This is, indeed, a VERY good thing on many fronts. More business is shipping by rail on Long Island, which means more trains to run on more days, and more opportunities to catch the action!! Hope this trend continues!!

NYA rolled past Queens Village Yard westbound late this morning, mostly high-side gondolas, looked like an MP-15ac and a GP38-2 for power. Didn't get a good look, was involved in something down at street level.

Is 270 the only engine left with an ASC Box? (didn't want to start a new thread)

Just caught two jeeps eastbound at the railroad crossing in Wyandanch.

I imagine someone got a clue that cabs painted black results in hotter temperatures verses lighter paint, in this case white.

That's a good point, it looks like 101 got repainted to the old green and white scheme and also got a white roof.

RS70/71 went out to Brookhaven from pond tonight (4/3/13) with 155/2081/268. Brought a tank and maybe 20 hoppers out there and returned light. Could possibly be 2081s last trip on the Mainline.

It seems to me that that train was a bit overpowered.

People never seem to grasp the concept that even if there are X engines in lashup, not every one of those is necessarily online or providing tractive effort. Sometimes it's just easier to bring another along for the ride or have it as an "oh sh*t" backup if it's not needed elsewhere, as is quite often the case.

It's a interesting thought that a spare engine would be brought along when dealing with 40 year old equipment. However, it's not an obvious thing to grasp that a cost concious railroad would load up a train with non-revenue producing weigh, especially while maintaining the engines in most reliable condition.

Almost all of NY+A's power has LIRR ASC/Cab Signals, and not field repairable,it's a good idea to have a 2nd unit that can lead in a pinch.
All the lease units lack the ASC/Cab Signal gear needed to lead.

Think of it this way, do you want to spend the rush hours stuck on a siding and maybe go "dead" on the HOS law due to no working ASC?

That makes no sense. Why have a third unit without ASC if 2 with will do the job?

More then likely extra power is protect the schedule.
