Hi, does anyone know if the roof over the cab on the old PT Alco switchers was ever painted with a red/brown primer and left that way?
I seem to recall that they were before they did away with the 'bloody nose' scheme.

I've looked through my slides and books in my library and have been unable to find a shot that would confirm this, but that
doesn't mean it didn't happen. During the 70's it didn't seem as though any two locomotives came out of the paint shop looking
the same. I remember someone tabulating 13-14 variations of the paint scheme. PT's switchers could get pretty grubby between
inspections, at which time they might get washed. Under the right lighting conditions that crud could look like red primer or rust.

Non-Kodachrome slides from that era also had a tendency to shift toward red over time, unfortunately.

Ah, but through the miracle of "piracy", I have both stolen and color corrected the image. In this case PT 1057 has a distinctly boxcar red roof.

Oh, I have not saved the image for myself. A moral pirate.
