Just a couple questions:

When were the rails picked up?

When was it last in use and by whom?

Why are there still rail cars sitting on what's left of the line in the Bronx next to the Deagen?

Lastly, given it's location, I wonder if it would have ever been a useful line in the future considering the growth of the county and the density of rail traffic.

When were the rails picked up?

Putnam Dvision
Abandonment Dates

Mahopac Mines-Mahopac Falls - 1902
155th Street-High Bridge - 1916
Mohansic Lake-Yorktown Heights - 1917
Mahopac Falls-Baldwin Place - 1931
Getty Square-Van Cortlandt Park - 1943
East View-Lake Mahopac - 1962
Lake Mahopac-Carmel - 1969
Carmel-Putnam Junction - 1970
Chauncey-East View - 1977
Kingsbridge-Chauncey - 1983?

(technically, the rails were in place to East View until construction of the rail trail in the 1990s)

When was it last in use and by whom?

Conrail operated the line and serviced the last customers in The Bronx. Metro-North uses the stub in The Bronx to store cars and the stub in Put Junction to turn trains.

Why are there still rail cars sitting on what's left of the line in the Bronx next to the Deagen?

MOW cars stored by Metro-North or by construction contractors working on MN projects.

Lastly, given it's location, I wonder if it would have ever been a useful line in the future considering the growth of the county and the density of rail traffic.

Maybe. But it's a bike trail now.

This topic has been discussed extensively in the New York Central forum- lots of detailed information there...
