I picked up the book NYC Color Guide to Freight & Pass. cars this Saturday at the show and paging through it I found that the 18900 series wood cabooses look very similar to the UP CA-1 offered by Walthers, with some obvious minor differences. Anyone else notice this before, I might get one to bash it into this NYC caboose. Looks like no end windows, ladders, steps and trucks are the most obvious. Give me your opinions before I buy one of the HO CA-1's to attempt this. Thanks.
Here's a link to a photo.

The finishing is nice on the Walther's NYC caboose... but I think it would take some bashing to make it match an actual NYC class.

The body would work but the cupola
is to high.It could work for an MC
cab as is.The one you show on fallen flags I believe is a T&OC.

you will find plans for B4 cabs.

Brian originally asked about how close to the NYC car was to the Walthers UP CA-1 caboose, not the Walthers CB&Q caboose:

Looks like it could be used as a stand in with a change in trucks.

Why buy and kitbash Trix has come out with a very nice caboose that is closer to what your looking for.

Thanks Terry for trying to keep this on the subject of similarities between the CA-1 and the caboose in question. I know Trix is making the 'standard' caboose, I noticed the similarities between this and the CA-1 and thought it would make a good stand in for this type of NYC caboose. I have found out it was 24' and the CA-1 is 30', I ordered it anyway and it will becaome a NYC cab. Kitbashing is part of model railroading to me.
Thanks for all the input.

It looks like a fairly easy kitbash.

You'd need to shorten the body between the window and the end at the short end. Between the windows on the long end and maybe a few boards between the windows under the cupola.

You'd need to fill in the end windows as well. The side windows need to have the bottom rail of the window sash widened and the wide lintel above and skirt below added.

The steps need to be changed from four step to three step. And a heavy wood beam added as well. Then change the trucks.

BTW, I have some pics of a brass version of this car if you want them.
