I noticed tonight that the State of Vermont is selling 6 former MBTA Budd cars. But by the look of the photos that don’t look like former MBTA equipment. Does anyone have any insight?

Thank you.

Maybe the T should put in a bid. They do need more equipment, after all.

Those are the 'Boise Budds' - they were RDC's that were rebuilt as non-powered passenger cars in the early 1980's.

Heck, if the traction motors are still working shove them on the Fairmount line, viola! Instant Indigo Line now just a few more stops and everything should be good.

I found this information online on Wikipedia...

These cars are the ex coaches of the Champlain Valley Flyer was a commuter train that operated between Burlington, Vermont south to Shelburne, Vermont. The service was started up as a way for motorists to avoid traveling on US 7 during construction. The train began its operation on December 4, 2000. The train's rolling stock consisted of a rebuilt Vermont Railway GP38-2, 10 ex-Virginia Railway Express de-motored RDC coaches, and, when needed, a baggage car with an HEP unit. The trains, though, never ran above three or four cars. The train never attracted the ridership it had hoped for and in 2002 was threatened to be cut from the state budget. The newly elected Gov. Jim Douglas decided that the train was not viable, and the last train ran on February 28, 2003

RDCs don't have traction motors.

If the T needs Buddliners for commuter rail service, there are 27 of them available for sale in Canada. Here is the link:

If the T was desperate which it seens they are. Could these particular Bud cars be a temporary viable option?
The T had large fleet of them before. Why not try to set up a short term lease on these until the 75 bi levels are delivered? It certainly couldn't hurt.

If the T really wanted a fleet of short-term cars, the should have made a bid for Septa's push-pull fleet when it was on the market. There were no takers. A friend of mine said they are pretty identical to the T's single-level cars, and some have center doors, and were built to Metro North specs. If they didn't grab those, then Septa must have asked for too much. They really are in great condition, and are only used during rush hours during the week, and collect dust the rest of the time.

I really like the idea of running all these old Budd cars on the MBTA. Lets get all 27 of them and put them on the South side. Since they are legally double ended locomotives, they would each need new PHW cab signals on both ends (that's about three times the price of the Budd car) and since they can't go fast enough under their own power to nail all the aspects that have to be tested in a cab signal road test, they would probably have to push them through the test with a 1025 or 1050 class (in both directions perhaps?). Going after the coded territory overspeed should give the old Detroit Diesels the ride of their (very short remaining) lives.

Actually, if you look through the slide show in the Canadian RDCs, they Cummins N-14 engines installed in the rebuild.

Nice slide show! Maybe those can go fast enough to nail all the cab signal aspects! :-D

Maybe the T should buy the boise budds...there's one Northside trainset(minus loco, which there are no extra's either) right there!

RDCs don't have traction motors.
Then how do they move?
