Lake Shore Electric Museum Folding - Equipment Sold

The National Capital Trolley Museum in Maryland bought Blackpool boat car #606, MBTA PCC 3334, and Toronto PCC 4602. I think it's a little odd they're getting the Toronto PCC since they have one of its sister cars (#4603). When I was there in 2007, they said they love their Toronto PCC.

Funny to see a Boston pcc go to Washington, since seashore has 22 boston pcc's. But we are getting the rapid car and trailer

Looks like Electric City got a couple cars, CA&E 453 and Shaker Heights PCC cars 63, 71 and 76. Any idea what kind of shape these cars are in? Looks like they want an operational PCC...

I can't find anything recent on CA&E 453, so I can't even guess at what they want to do with it. Any idea who built it? It's either good enough to restore or they want it for parts for another project.

If I squint hard, #71 looks like it's in extremely faded TCRT colors #63 is the only one from Minneapolis though (nee TCRT #352), and looks rougher than #322 when we received her. I'll ask about their conditions when my fellow volunteers get back from Cleveland.

It looks like the links have been blocked, so I don't know if you're pulling my leg or not. I'm specifically interested in CA&E 453, the only picture I can find matching that number is a B&W in-service pic (similar to car 431), but the year of manufacture seems to be more in line with a PCC style car. From what I can tell ECTM has nothing in their collection matching 453, so I'm guessing it's not a parts car, unless it's similar to the PCCs they acquired or the two PCC style cars they already have. To get a car specifically without any stable mates should mean that the car is at or near operational status. I'll try to link a pic.

Let's try this, I found a color photo... BERA is showing 453 as a 1945 St. Louis car. They are also showing similar numbered cars, of similar years, so I'm going to say that IS the body style. Pretty traditional for a '45 model, huh? Looks like it would be a good fit at ECTM, hopefully it's in decent condition. It's listed as 'stored inoperable.'

Great photo. Love these old CAE cars, they had a great fleet.

When I volunteered at Trolleyville back in the 80s, the 453 was not used regularly. It was pretty much in the same condition as it was when it arrived from the CA&E. I don't believe that they ever pulled parts off for use on the other cars, but never say never. They did at one time put all 4 St. Louis cars and the Pullman 409 together and ran a 5 car steel train, but I did not witness that. As far as the 36 motors having to be reinstalled, they were out when I was there, all rebuilt, and new bearings to put it all together. I mentioned several times that we needed to do this, but it never seemed to be a priority. Sad to see all the hard work by everyone over the years to get squandered. Hopefully, the cars enjoy a long life wherever they go.

If you consider the railway preservation community one big unit, their work was not squandered. CA&E 36 will be able to run with maybe two weekends of work in IRM's electric car shop because it was well-taken care of in Ohio - it would be entirely different if they'd left all the cars outside and bickered for years about what they wanted to do with them.

So there is a chance that 453 is indeed operable or close to it?

New York Museum of Transportation picked up a line car that will be very useful as we expand our electrification... now we just need to raise money to move the car to Rochester.

You should see the car in the next couple weeks. I believe it will piggy back onto one of the moves of equipment to CT trolley museum if I remember what I saw on the quote list correctly.

If people have not heard The Connecticut Trolley Museum is getting 4 pieces of equipment from this sale. They are:
#1- the Iowa Southern single truck line car
#101- the Iowa Southern freight motor
#303- Aurora, Elgin & Chicago wooden interurban
and finally the single truck bobber caboose.

All piece were restored at Trolleyville and are all supposed to be operable. We were in Cleveland this past weekend to get any missing pieces from these cars located and stored on the cars. We also prepared the cars for shipment. We expect these cars to arrive during November.

AEFR/SHRT 304 arrived at the museum intact and unloaded with incident. I look forward to seeing it since I'm out of town.
From what I heard this was in the front of the warehouse by the door so no one else was getting their stuff until 304 was out.
