Quick question,

Since i am only familiar with NJ Transit's geeps, when i came upon this picture:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=77671

i was surprised to see this GP40 without the door on the side next to the hood. Why is this?

M.A.R.C. #53 is a Morrison-Knudsen/Boise Locomotive rebuild from a GP40. The GP40WH-2s where rebuilt from older CSX/SCL/C&O/B&O/Conrail units with ATSF F45 hoods that were traded in.

So its basically a GP40 mixed with a F45?

Wow, thats right up there with the GP40X: not quite sure if its ugly or not.

Correction, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific also had GP40X units.

Santa Fe - 10
Union Pacific - 6
Southern Pacific - 4
Southern - 3

What is also interesting is that only Santa Fe and Southern bought GP50's. I wounder if the experimental HT-B truck under the UP and SP units turned them off to the GP50?

What is interesting is that with the MARC units they combined the cab and nose of the F45 with the long hood from the GP40 (modified), while the NJT units combined the GP40 cab and nose with the cowl (long hood) from the F45 (modified).

When I look at the GP40WH-2 (as in the photo) I feel that I am looking at one-half of a DDA40X.

I see those NJT GP40FH-2s all the time, like 4138, at bay head yard.

You've got some mixed up info. Those are not F45 hoods found on the MARC units. Those hood sections, mostly the radiator section, are modeled after those found on the SD45. Also while the cab may look like it was from an F45 it is not. The cabs were built from scratch by MK for these units and are modeled after the F45 cab.

There are a bunch more GP40s with wide noses. The CN had a lot built that way (GP-40-2LW), and they've foudn their way to Guilford and the MBTA by now. GRS kept the units in their CN freight configuration, and the MBTA had theirs rebuilt, and, like MARC, they lack a door in the nose as well.

GRS: http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 3AGuilford

MBTA GP40MC (rebuilt): http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 3A7%3AMBTA

The MBTA units were rebuilt by AMF in Montreal, and while they share some traits with MARC's units (wide noses, flared radiators), they are very different, and from very different sources.[/url]
