What is the traffic like in Glenwood, MN on a typical weekday? How many trains and what might be a good time? Is it railfan friendly? I'm guessing the traffic there is greater than in Alexandria... About 15 miles north?

Couldn't tell you about the railfan-friendliness, but according to this map there are about 20 trains a day through Glenwood. Only 9 a day run north through Alexandria though.

Glenwood's current traffic is basically:

At least one switch crew/yard job working at all times.

12-18 trains per 24 hours Glenwood (crew change)-Lowry-Farwell-Elbow Lake-Enderlin, ND (crew change)-Harvey, ND (crew change)-Portal, ND (crew change)-Moose Jaw, SK (crew change).

4-7 trains per 24 hours Glenwood (crew change)-Forada-Alexandria-Thief River Falls (crew change)-Noyes (crew change)-Winnepeg, MB (crew change).

17-26 trains per 24 hours Glenwood (crew change)-Sedan-Brooten-Paynesville-Minneapolis-St Paul (crew change).

Glenwood's trains are spread out fairly evenly throughout the day; but late afternoon-evening-overnight-early mornings are generally busier. There's usually a lull from late morning to late afternoon. Spring-summer-fall trackwork east, west, or north of Glenwood will impact arrivals/departures. Usually, Glenwood's only silent for about an hour before something starts moving. Train numbers are even east, odd west and north. (#498 Moose Jaw-Glenwood-St Paul, #290 Winnepeg-Thief River Falls-Glenwood-St Paul, #295 St Paul-Glenwood-Moose Jaw)

Glenwood Yard is fairly "friendly" for train watching/photography. Railfans/photographers are usually ignored so long as they stay off CP property and remain on public roads, which are in close proximity to the yard tracks. The east-west main lines have MN State Highway 55 within a stone's throw for many miles either side of Glenwood. The north-south main has various highways nearby (out of sight) between Glenwood and Thief River Falls, MN.
