A lot of ink has been devoted to the remaining EL locomotives. Does anyone have a list of the CNJ locomotives which are still in existence ? Could any of the SD-40's still be around ?

Several of the SD-40s are still around. Conrail rebuilt some in sd40-2s. These, as far as I know, are now in lease service. There is also an RS-3, 1554, rotting away in Jim Thorpe. I have heard that the Northampton Development Corp., who still operate some former NH&B trackage, have a Conrail RS-3m that is also ex-CNJ. At least two gp-7s left too, 1523 and 24.

Ken, presumably these locomotives lost their steam generators a long time ago. When did that happen?

  by Ken W2KB

I have no idea when that would have happened, but they were refurbished at least once since the CNJ days, so that may have been the time. Someone else will likely have the facts.

SW1 CNJ #1012 is at RMDI , Duryea PA, not running. Unit is still painted as Pocono Northeast #601 with its CR markings showing #8408

Last summer I had some business at a salvage yard along the AC line and saw a GP 7 or GP 9 with a faded Jersey Central Lines lady liberty logo pulling a small freight. SRRNJ maybe?

Some of you may be talking about two different locomotives here. The SD-40 would be a three-axle freight locomotive, while the GP-40P would be a two-axle passenger locomotive. CNJ had a few of both. The NJ Transit locos are GP-40Ps. I'm not sure what happened to the SD-40s, but odds are, they were either re-built ot traded in, and I suspect the latter. There's a recent discussion of this in the CNJ group over on Yahoo.

There are also purported to be two CNJ locomotives at the B&O railroad museum: the original Ingersoll-Rand diesel-electric switcher #1000, and a Camelback, the exact model of which escapes me now.

Camelback is a 4-6-0. Yes both are there.

There is also a CNJ steam switcher at Minersville, PA. 0-8-0 if I recall correctly. Long term project to restore it underway.

NS 3445 I believe is an ex CNJ SD40. So is the Sd40-2 #8885 on CSX......

Here's one running in its day: http://forums.railfan.net/forums.cgi?bo ... /c0018.jpg

And another: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cnj/cnj3672ags.jpg

Sometimes would park at Belmar adjacent to where the engine would pause for the station stop, just to hear the prime mover rev to a fury. Made the air pulse. POWER!

The C.N.J. steam locomotive sitting at Minersville, Pa. is #113 a 0-6-0 with tender , the 113 will be up and running sometime with in two years . The last time she ran was in the 1960`s

The steam locomotive camelback in the B&O museum is No. 580 ? That locomotive is just a shell theres no firebox and other key fators gone .

Hope that helps,
Leonard

Why was the firebox, etc. removed? I believe that I have seen photos of it enroute (on the CNJ part) to the museum and it appeared to be operating under its own power. Was there an aborted attempt to recondition it at some point?
