General discussion about locomotives, rolling stock, and equipment

I read on Wikipedia that these locomotives can run for only about 10 minutes in third rail mode. Is this correct? If so, why? Other dual mode models, such as the ones on LIRR, can run indefinitely as such.

I think the notion is that P32's take about 10 minutes (in transit) to run from PSNY to SSY on 3rd rail . There is no time limit for how long the units are actually in 3rd rail mode (i.e. they can be standing for hours or even days while in this mode.)

The Genesis is designed as short time electric, but has no problem running in E mode for hour or two.
running in E mode is not too healthy for cars however as HEP shuts down at each switch or third rail gap.
putting quite a strain on HVAC systems. originally it was designed to run in E mode at 45 mph, but later that was raised to 60 mph.
