I saw a former Conrail yard switcher yesterday that I had heard had been retired. It is CSX # 1024, a former Conrail SW 1001 unit.
This unit had been assigned to switch jobs in the Jacksonville, FL area. I hadn't seen it for awhile, which was consistent with the word that it was retired from active service.
But, yesterday (Sunday, April 10, 2005), it was pulling a very long cut of intermodal cars out of CSX's Prichard Rd. Intermodal Yard through downtown Jacksonville and across the St. Johns River drawbridge to the Florida East Coast Railway's Bowden Yard in south Jacksonville. The cut of intermodal cars was destined to become a hot southbound FEC intermodal to Miami!
CSX # 1024 is in CSX's "Dark Future" color scheme. Looking good!
