I went out on Sunday morning to catch the B702 eastbound with a SD50 leading a slugset and 12 cars. He came back light from Highfield, Md- Security Md. and switched Maryland Metals in Security before returning to Hagerstown. (The SD50 did not go to MD Metals).

Here are the best of the bunch though:

Looked like in the last one, the ENGINEER and Conductor Posed as they came uder... must a saw ya snappin the pics.... Is that a Road Slug as second unit on the first pic??

The "posed" photo you are looking at is actually the conductor on the sidesteps watching the rear of the movement as the train backs up, and a track maintainance employee (wearing the orange hardhat) with his trusty switch broom, on the deck of the CSX 2246. The trackman is present to clean any switches fouled by snow. The engineer is in the other unit. I can only assume that the trackage here is too light for the 6 axle sd-50 therefore the crew is utilizing the mother/slug 4 axle set to switch the industry. oh yes, the CSX 2246 is a slug.

Why was 2246 on a train like that? I though theyd use morepower, not a so called DUMMY...., or are slugs powered? I never understood that concept.

The slug does not have a prime mover (read: motor), but the traction motors do work, giving more pull.

Ok... so no engine, however the wheels just move... right?

Correct-you get extra pull from the traction motors of the slug. Example: Say you have a slug hooked up wih a GP40-2--you'll have the four traction motors of the GP40-2 plus the four traction motors of the slug, which is a former GP30.

Sorry about the late response..... yes I know the crew pretty well. They had first seen me near Chewsville and kept there eyes peeled for me the rest of the way. Fred Detrow, a friend of mine, was the engineer and two more guys from the track department shoveled snow on the switches as well as the conductor. Was a nice little run to watch.

And glad you enjoy my pictures!
