I found this article online today. It appears the 2 were riding a coal load and met their end in the unloading process. Take notice the type of freight car mentioned for transporting coal.

Well I found more on the story this morning.

A couple who romanticized and lived a modern-day adventure by riding railroad cars across the U.S. were killed when a train dumped its load of coal at a Florida power plant.

The late folksinger Bruce ("Utah") Phillips (who sang a number of railroad and hobo songs, and who had experience with the hobo community) sometimes gave mini-lectures about freight-train riding at folk festivals. He didn't come out and say "Don't do it" (probably knew young people too well to think it would do any good!), but he realistically emphasized the dangers: I think many people hearing him came away with the bottom-line impression "Sounds like fun, but it's really NOT a good idea!"

Dangers not mentioned in the article toolmaker links include getting hit by moving equipment in a yard while trying to board a freight, getting locked into a boxcar that will then get parked on a siding for weeks. Not to mention encounters with thoroughly unsympathetic railroad police.
