I cannot seem to find the stats for average miles per breakdown, average miles when the car has to be in the repair shop etc. I'd like to compare the Metro-North and LIRR fleet.

LIRR M3 vs Metro-North M3a
M7 vs M7a
DM/DE30 vs the Genesis

I don't know what the figures are either but the LIRR has greatly increased the miles between failures for their DE/DM fleet. They had issued a press release about it a couple years ago and the information was posted on their website.

I'm pretty sure the information was posted and regularly updated on both LIRR and MNR's websites. Miles between failures seems to be a pretty standard industry yardstick. Since the websites have been redone I can't find much of anything but it's probably still there.

Like Otto said, there can be a lot of reasons why the figures would vary. But I really don't see a whole lot of difference between say MNR M3s and LIRR M3s. They're essentially the same equipment built with the same components, aren't they?
