Greetings!
I'm Jerry Hartzler, webmaster of the Kishacoquillas Railroad at http://www.kvrr.net. It was a railroad that once ran in beautiful central Pennsylvania from 1893 to 1940. The rails were said to have been "as long as its name" and only stretched nine miles from its depot in Belleville to a connection with the PRR in Reedsville (The Milroy Branch). It was rather unique in that it was one of a few railroads that was built by local stock subscriptions only and was never bought out by a larger carrier. Like most small off-the-beaten-track roads it overflowed with character and charm. Much of this was no doubt due to the fact that it was controlled throughout its 47-year existence by Belleville's country doctor, Dr. John P. Getter. In 1928, when the Pennsy discontinued passenger service along its MIlroy Branch, the KV took it over, traveling an additional seven miles to the Main Line in Lewistown via PRR trackage rights. It was the railroad that then 24-year-old Robert G. Lewis, future publisher of Railway Age magazine, tried to buy and operate himself when he heard it was going to be sold in 1939.
