Re: NEC Future: HSR "High Line", FRA, Amtrak Infrastructure Plan

I don't know how serious proposals are, though I suspect the reactions were often loud. That said, I think it's good for politicians to understand the requirements and to clearly voice them. It's better to be honest and clear and upfront about some of the impacts. To have effective high speed rail, ...

I will note, there's a reason that Amtrak (and pretty much every other industry) to a point has followed the airline model in terms of capacity: airplanes that aren't flying aren't making money. Railroad cards that aren't rolling, aren't making money. It's pretty hard to justify keeping extra cars a...

Several thoughts: Yes, I agree, ATL-DC could use a day train, I've argued this for years. It would better leverage the use of the existing staff for example. And despite the issues, I still wish Amtrak had been able to negotiate something with CAF to get more sleepers built. I'm sure they could have...

Re: "Adirondack" as a commuter service? Saratoga Springs to Albany

Yes, using both lines (current and CP, thanks for the reminder) and new stations simply makes too much sense. So it will never happen. That said, I do think a station near SUNYA/NYS Office complex makes a lot of sense, even without commuters adding that would be a reasonable stop for some trains for...

The last time some sort of commuter service was contemplated from north of the Mohawk river to Albany it ended up failing because rather than "Ok, let's use the existing Amtrak route" one of the local politicians insisted that it follow the CSX (?) route up through Watervliet. Now arguably...

Amtrak offering new service starting April 1st

I'm simply reporting the news, not making the news: But Amtrak today announced the introduction of a much needed (though some would say redundant) service. The Loud Car . Here headphones are verboten and your phone must be on speaker mode. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FsokSw3XgAA7KoS?format=jpg&n...

I agree with both the last two posts. Though I'd definitely add Chatham NY as a stop, at least on weekends, for the weekenders. But I do agree, there isn't necessarily much Albany/Pittsfield traffic, it's ultimately the nodes on the network that works. So a reliable Albany/Springfield connection wit...

Also, there's not much between Lee and Westfield. I'm not sure an exit there would get much use.

There's no dining car on the Crescent these days?
That may have just made a travel decision for me.

I've been in 6 of these, I need to get to the others, especially Cincinnati Union Terminal, home of the Justice League of America :-)

Yeah, simply not going to happen in 99% of the cases. For one: in many cases, there's simpy no room for additional tracks. And where there are, between NIMBYism and interference with the other tracks, you're be in courts for years trying to make it happen. NYS has been discussing this for ALB-BUF fo...

Baggage cars are an option that is being explored by Amtrak. Bike racks are part of the consists from day 1. Amtrak does not have a firm estimate on battery effectiveness, very dependent on route. Amtrak is exploring caternary-battery setups (recharge along caternary "islands" and station...

I'll take it! And I'd even ride it occasionally. Some good caving spots out there.

That said, it would make sense to explore a continuation to Carbondale or St. Louis. Network is key. The more connections, the more likely it is people will ride it.

But for now, I'd take this.
