The light rail cars (Green and Blue Lines) are actually slightly older (1980-81) than the heavy rail (Red Line) cars (1984-85). They may have been "refreshed" more recently, though.

I recently returned from a road trip out West, during which I stopped in Austin to ride the MetroRail and take pictures of it:

I've seen glimpses of it on (of all places) the "Wheel of Fortune" TV show. They once taped a week's worth of shows at Hilton Waikoloa Village, interspersed with scenes of the facilities. Here's a picture of it from Webshots. Go to http://maps.google.com, search for "Hilton Waikoloa V...

I'm coming in late on this, but I took advantage of that pedestrian bridge west of Tonnelle myself, some years ago. This shot looks eastward towards the Tonnelle Ave. bridge.

Oh, goodie! :-D Now I can safely add Austin to the itinerary for my projected trip out West in May. I've ridden similar trains in Germany, so it will be interesting to see how they do here.

Google does generate and cache the small thumbnail version of the image that you see at the top left of the page when you click on an entry in the image search result. As far as I can tell, otherwise they take you to the original image on your server, or to the "containing page" on your se...

Also, like Railbus63, I never post anything near full-resolution images, and always add visible identifying text. My current camera produces 10-megapixel images. When I crop them and tweak the brightness and contrast for posting, I also reduce the size to no more than about 0.5 megapixel, typically ...

Just so everyone is aware, Google Images is busy all the time, harvesting images that are posted on the internet, If you run your own site, you can block Google and other "well-behaved" robots from harvesting your images by installing a robots.txt file that tells the robots which files or...

For German timetables, you can start with the interactive map at http://kursbuch.bahn.de/hafas/kbview.exe/dn?rt=1&mainframe=IK_strecken You zoom in a couple of levels by clicking on the map at the location you want to examine more closely. At this level all the lines are labeled with timetable n...

According to the Capital MetroBlog the current goal is to start rail operation during the first quarter of the year, despite their having dumped Veolia as the operator in favor of Herzog late last year. I hope they actually make it without too much further delay, because I might be heading out that ...

I don't think Holland even has distinct "commuter rail" services such as the German S-Bahns. Cities are close together and I think service on most routes is very frequent, usually on easily memorized schedules at regular intervals.

I don't understand a transit company whose website tells you the cities they serve, but doesn't tell you the routes their buses follow. I think it's because web site designers and the general public nowadays are more familiar with airline-style point to point service than with bus/rail-style linear...

I think Cleveland deserves at least an asterisk. Most of the Shaker Heights "boulevard" sections of the current Green and Blue Lines were originally built about 1913-1915, and operated over previously existing streetcar lines to reach downtown Cleveland until the "rapid transit" ...

He said that the reason mass transport use is low in the US is due to the lack of high density inner urban areas in American cities. This i assume means that people tend to not live and work in the inner city areas of American cities. Is this really true? Yes. Most American cities are surrounded by...

Trains were free this weekend and about 92,000 people took advantage of the opportunity to finally ride on the Link trains. I rode trains that were SRO with up to a 60 minute wait to get on. This seems to be the usual experience with opening day on new systems lately. When Charlotte's line opened a...
