Re: CSX to acquire Pan Am Railways

I think Waterville west could potentially be 40 MPH in the not too distant future, but like others have pointed out, there's really not a whole lot to gain by going to 40 MPH East of Waterville to Keag as there just isn't that much of a time savings over that short of a distance to justify the expen...

I could be wrong but I don't think they run on Sundays so that was essentially 2 days worth of traffic on today's train.

The East/West mergers may be further down the road but I think that CP+CSX and/or NS+CN could be in the nearer term.

What I find interesting is that if the talked about CP/UP/CSX mega-merger ever takes place, the KCS route from KC to Laredo will probably lose much of its' Mexico business to the much more direct UP lines from Chicago and KC to Laredo.. That is certainly a ways off but definitely a distinct possibil...

The only way CP is going to increase traffic on this line is if they can develop more intermodal and unit trains business. There is little growth opportunity for them on the carload side and much of their existing business will be in jeopardy once CSX steps into the picture.

Yes, symbols change all the time, and in terms of daily manifest train counts it's been 2 (sometimes 3) each way West of Rigby for decades now.

What, if any, is the latest news on Dragon's plans for shipping cement by rail out of Thomaston?

[false information deleted] It was a constant parade of traffic and adding to the excitement was the constant game of leap frog they played on account of too many trains not enough crew. :-D Not sure where you are getting your figures from but there hasn't been more than 2-3 scheduled round trip ma...

Last I checked you still can't make digital cardboard boxes, packaging/wrapping paper, release paper, toilet paper, paper towels, etc and that's where the mills are concentrating their efforts now, which are growth markets. In terms of CSX clearing the line to Keag for DS service, can you please sho...

CSX didn't buy ST just to go after 25mph running with 30 car trains xD. The mills are not a stable long term investment. Get ready for oil, racks, stacks, grain, ethanol etc to be zooming across the Maine Border. The mills are not going away, have switched to growth products and are actually increa...

The comment on majority of Irving traffic going to NY is a huge mis-categorization. First off, they produce a variety of products from Lumber, to pulp, paper, tissue, ect. Each market is different. Lumber sticks around mostly locally although it can go to Toronto and the Midwest, every now and agai...

Agreed. In hindsight, not so sure that CP would have bought the CMQ if they had known that CSX was going to be making its way up to SJ. They can talk all they want about opportunities but CSX is always going to have the upper hand with its Keag to Ayer to Selkirk and beyond route/network. My main q...

No matter how poor the infrastructure may be, it doesn't matter. If CSX can single line business at a major rate discount then that's the way it's going to go and you can take that to the bank. They will not have to wait until the line is rebuilt. Furthermore, from the reports that I've seen, CP is ...

Even with class 1 track that was only good for 263K Pan Am had a lot more business when they were running to Keag. Class 2 track with 286K will be more than enough to satisfy any potential shipper up that way and really not even worth discussing any more at this point.
