And up here in CHicago we see blu/ylw SF units frequently, although a dual GP30 lashup has to be a sight. After living on Conrail's ex-NYC waterfront line all my life, I'm used to nothing other than the newest from Erie and London. Now with NS, we see all kinds of hilarious stuff - it's a nice change.

Best way to differentiate 38's from 40's is the turbo. 38's don't whistle, and they have that filter box immediately ahead of the dynamic brake. 40's whistle when they load up.

FYI that's a Toyota Tundra, the fullsize pickup. Tacoma is the little one. Also, the P42 looks good with the light blue background rather than the drab grey standard. I think the smartest thing Amtrak did looks-wise was to emphasize blue and make the red an accent stripe at the bottom - it looks esp...

Pantographs

Original Lake Shore cars had one pan - when South Shore started running over IC to downtown, IC mandated two pans on new CSS equipment and this has been status quo ever since. When IC bought highliners, they ordered one pan only. Now NICTD is the only group out there with two-pan cars that I can thi...

I just heard the gov't approved a $4m study for the expansion plans. My fears regard Kensington - I hear NICTD is at capacity for the interlocker there. Here's my interesting solution I dreamed up: Route the new trains down IC to 115th, over to Hegewisch, and then down Monon to their new terminus. R...

If the CTA is so cash strapped, that 5 miles of copper wire is worth some definite money the way the metals market is these days. Also, all those darn steel towers don't have to be dug up, just cut off at ground level. It's got to suck to be a transit agency right now that needs rolling stock, becau...

On 3200 you can lean against the bulkhead at the doors and have a clear view out the railfan window unles manute bol is sitting in the railfan seat.

Hey I just rode the new Sumitomo's on the Rock a few days ago, what a comfy ride and great view from those oversize windows. As a longtime South Shore rider, I figured the equipment would work out pretty nice - their Sumitomo cars look nice and ride well, even compared to long distance equipment lik...

Here's an interesting semi-related topic: If the Rock Island district is as busy as the Electric district (or close to it) who nominates all LaSalle street service to be electrified? I do! 1. I love electric MU's. 2. Coal power for electric MU's is way cheaper than oil power, and it would be a good ...

Anybody else think dark future is just a slight modify of the same C&O/PM scheme intro'd in the 40's and reappears every 25 years? In the forties PM switchers had this, then in the sixties C&O units had this, now CSX units have the same blue, just this time the PM E7 influence shows up with ...

I may have asked this in another forum, but are any preservation efforts being made for at least one car? Being that they are 600v DC in running condition, Illinois Rwy Museum might like one - they don't have much restoration efforts to do (spend money on) but they are instantly operable as an attra...

Hey here's an idea - Via colors and the 1947 Pere Marquette are quite similar - how about suitable altering E7 #101's scheme for a Via F40 along with the P42's while we're at it? PM likely had the best looking E's ever made.

Yeah Chicago is the place for Soo units, and the classic white/red too, not that crappy psuedo-CP all red of the early 90's. I see them all the time in Bensenville. I saw two SD60's while landing at midway a few days ago in the white/red look.
