Quick question I understand where the yard is. But is the brick structure is it an old NYC powerhouse or repair facility? Thanks Bill I think what you're referring to is actually the old Substation 3, Kingsbridge. Below is a photo taken many years ago, probably in the 1920s. The substation is the b...

An article in the Westchester Rockland Journal-News provides details about Metro-North's rising overtime costs for expanded track work. Overtime for track workers has jumped from 204,000 hours in 2012 to almost 600,000 hours in 2017. The situation is exacerbated by the fact "hundreds of jobs in...

This is from a news story in the Journal News about Tuesday evening's severe rain and wind storms: As Tuesday afternoon slipped into Tuesday evening, a storm descended on the Lower Hudson Valley. Just in time to wreck the evening rush. The early spring storm downed trees, knocked out power and pushe...

Again, looking at this from both sides, the training seems to be adequate for most engineers. An accident like this, as terrible as it was, is extremely rare. This was a 14-mile route with one serious speed restriction. Things happen quickly at 80 mph.

I'm curious about the exact nature of the "mistakes" and I would expect that eventually they will be explained in the NTSB report. NTSB also usually establishes how crew members spent their time in the day or two prior to an incident. I tend to doubt that they will find the engineer wasn't...

Below is the lead to Don Phillips' recent T RAINS Magazine column about the Cascade wreck that was inadvertently cut from the column as published. It is available on certain websites. (I don't know which ones. I got it via a private group.) One significant fact: the locomotive engineer on the derail...

Metro-North announced about an hour ago: Upper Harlem Line Substitute Bus Service for Sunday, March 18 For Sunday, March 18, substitute bus service will be in effect between 6:30 AM and 8 PM between Southeast, Brewster and Goldens Bridge Stations due to ongoing repairs to multiple downed power poles...

A kind of a timeline was provided by Metro-North on their Twitter page Friday -- @MetroNorth -- as to the suspension of train service between Golden's Bridge and Southeast. Normally I would expect them to operate the rush hour schedule and then suspend, but this time they abruptly announced the susp...

Apparently they cleared up between Goldens Bridge and Brewster for weekday service, but next weekend they'll be busing again. Here's the announcement on the MTA-Metro-North page: Metro-North will operate regular weekday service on Monday, March 12 with the potential for delays between Goldens Bridge...

I didn't see any mention of the problems currently being encountered on the Harlem Line. I guess the Metro-North statement describes it best. Substitute bus service remains in effect between Southeast, Brewster and Goldens Bridge Stations until further notice due to multiple downed power poles in th...

Very sad news. Vic was a member of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society and our New York Chapter. Wonderful guy and he will be sorely missed. :(

Thanks, I thought so. Did the engineer you heard get by it? Looks like some eastbounds are holding in the distance.

I very much enjoyed reading Noel Weaver's account of working for Metro-North in the early years. Thanks Noel.

Btw, we had been discussing crew qualifying. Is one trip a year enough?

I took the 5:12 to Port Jeff from Hunterspoint. At Jamaica they changed the route and went nonstop to Babylon, then to Hicksville, then all stops to Port Jeff. Took 4 hours to get from Hunterspoint to Port Jeff... Very creative! The current schedule shows Train 662 leaving Hunterspoint Avenue at 5:...
