Inward/outward facing cameras are a mandate and the unions have very little to say about how they are used. The ble lost a court action regarding inward facing cameras. Now all they can do is try to lessen the impact with diplomacy and tact. PTC will lessen the reliance on an engineer. It wont for n...

You're absolutely correct em2000. An apprenticeship that lasted years to master a steam locomotive was not nearly as difficult operating an M7. This from the same guy who posted how a Stationmaster is not your boss and can only advise an engineer.

Manual Block is gone in a year or two. 204 will always be there and a Conductor can make a call. What are you talking about? We're talking about reducing training for engineers. PTC is going to allow for a reduction in skill for an engineer the same way steam went to diesel and electric.

The company desire is to reduce the training necessary for the engineer job. We are critically short every summer and its becoming an operational problem. We hire a class of 10 or 12, wait over a year to be trained and end up with 6. If PTC performs as hoped for, the company can resubmit its trainin...

Kat, was the 660VDC chosen for a practical purpose in the early 20th century? there has to be a reason.

I like the tee shirts offered from this new collection better than NHRS. Old men like myself can relate to the old locomotive fleet, but this new design appeals to the younger workforce we currently employ. What 25yo cares about an Alco Century? I ordered several designs and the hoodie for a family ...

Publius, just before the curve exiting the Atlantic branch tunnel west of Nostrand ave station, you'll notice a curve built into the tunnel leading to a blocked up wall. That was a cutoff leading to the Manhattan Beach branch. The trains would travel on an el for a distance then drop to grade level....

On the LIRR we view the conductor position as the most important and responsible on the train especially when PTC arrives. Because of this we are in the future, creating a training program similar to engineers. I can't speak for Amtrak, but it would be advisable for them to reconsider how they quali...

Well eng 277, now I understand why you wrote what you did. Thank you for clarifying that. With that said, I see no reason why a conductor with speed and locomotive trouble codes on his I-phone. He should be able to monitor his locomotive and the speed of his train.

Conductor take over? Nope. Only a qualified Engineer can operate a train. That's not only a LIRR Rule, its Federal Law. Best a Conductor can do is stop the train, by using the Conductors Valve. (Emergency Brake.) If the need arose. Such as the Amtrak wreck near Philadelphia a few months ago. I wond...

Kelly we had one out in KO years ago that spoke like this guy/gal. They change when their job is on the line and their union can't help them.

Not sure why my previous post was deleted. Anyway. You are wrong. The guy cannot take anyone out of service. No where in the rules does it say he is a Supervisor of T+E. What the rules do state, as far as complying with instruction goes, he will give you a track assignment. Or he may request you do...

That was a mouthful Workextra. But well stated. The LIRR is considering the future of its diesel fleet and one school of thought is go back to basics. The other school is more technology. Whatever the choice, computers and crew monitoring is here to stay and will only be enhanced with future procure...

Kelly, the LIRR experimented with an overhead third rail? I didn't know that such a thing existed. Are there any railroads that adopted this type of propulsion system?

lirr42 left out an important fact that contributes to the high cost of fares on the LIRR. The former LIRR president who was fired from her position, is receiving full compensation and benefits.
