It basically says that Q Tower controlled the exit from the west end of the yard while F Tower (further west of Q) controlled the approaches to the tunnels themselves. Q controlled the west end of the yard-- it didn't control any switches in the main. A train leaving the yard got a signal from F to...
They're "measured" from Jersey City, but milepost 9 just west of Newark was 8 miles from end of track at Jersey City.
Guess Q is/was in that brick bldg just NE of Queens Blvd, between the yard and the LIRR mains?
That page shows distance from NY Penn, not milepost. Newark is 10.0 miles from NY Penn, but it's milepost 8.6 to 8.7. Milepost 47 used to be at the east end of the platform at Princeton Jct, and Milepost 14 was on the platform at Elizabeth.
Full power is full power But Run 8 doesn't always mean full power. If you leave the throttle of an ES44 in Run 8 as the train runs from level onto an upgrade that slows it to, say, 5 mph, "full power" would mean more tractive effort than adhesion will allow-- maybe 200000 lb. So less than...

It's a Pictorial Supplement to something about Elizabeth-- dunno what for.

If the GP30 actually has 50% more horsepower than the MP15, then it's supposed to produce 50% more tractive effort at a given speed, as long as that speed is more than, say, 20-25 mph. The GP30 isn't expected to produce 50% more tractive effort at 0 mph, or 10 mph. But at 40 mph two GP30s are suppos...
Say the train has 120 cars, each 143 tons total. Two units, each 210 tons, and we'll assume they can each do 3700 rail horsepower at any speed, but can't exceed 150000 lb tractive effort. We'll assume the train's rolling resistance at speed V (in miles/hour) is 36000 pounds, plus 800 times V, plus 6...
First place to look for stats for US RRs is the annual ICC reports. Lots of them online at hathitrust.org-- search for "annual statistics railways united states". (Click on "Catalog", not "Full-Text". You'll get 24 results, and the first one is what you want.) Much easi...
Don't see any track circuits on that diagram. Aren't all the westward signals L for left, and eastward signals are R for right?
