The HHPs have QNX Linux Is that from factory, or later? I had recollection of them running windows, at one point. Its ALWAYS been QNX, and unix variations for other modules. Windows isnt worth jack for running mission critical components in a locomotive. The main Car Monitor Unit runs on an 80386-16

As much as this will be hated it is time to ----------- Clean sheet this whole system. Start out with a manual switch to by pass all this high tech. IMO it is a matter of passenger safety. Otherwise sooner or later there is going to be deaths caused by personnel unable to restart a train. As well t...

I know, not windows 98 based
"stand by for technical difficulties " with the locomotive, is something passengers will hear.
The HHPs have QNX Linux

There is no manual switch. Literally everything is connected to a IO station, and put on a computer network. Every switch, button, etc is on the network via an IO station. It is run by 2 different fully redundant computer systems. The TCU (Traction control unit) and the CCU (Carbody control unit?) h...

Testing was done extensively on the ACS 64 but what happens is they keep making "tweaks" which end up breaking more things, much like how apple or google release NEW FEATURES and then all the old features dont work right, the ones you rely on. Siemens in EU is a different game. Its differe...

Of the total number of Siemens locomotives currently operating, exactly how many are experiencing serious operating problems? Of those that function normally, how are they able to keep running reliably and is there a common reason as to why those that failed do so? All of them. Even the ACS 64s, ev...

Brightline is not currently operating on lines with cab signals. The un opened section will be cabs, but the current section is not. Florida East Coast had their own cab signalling system on the main line. It was slightly different from the US&S 4-aspect system. I wasn't aware it was removed. 4...

Brightline is not currently operating on lines with cab signals. The un opened section will be cabs, but the current section is not. Also, brightline IS having problems, but you dont know that yet.

VIA chargers are built to the same T4 specs as the US units, and is also having problems.

Germany has lots of snow. But Germany isnt running the crappy Cummins QSK, an engine that was developed with no real world testing in locomotives. the german models are running MTU diesels that do not have the same emissions nonsense that the american units require.

Yes because the computer knows best. They supposedly programmed the computer to reverse the fan to try and keep the snow out of the cooling system. The cooling system that has to work the way it does, and be designed the way it is because of the emissions system. Engine temp and EGR temps are very i...

Not going to happen with all this baloney emissions nonsense and over computer, over microprocessor controlled crap.

RaILroads do not care about the operators they just care about the train moving and the passengers paying. The ACS and chargers CAN have the power knock out disabled and parameters changed for power knock out to come on. we could power brake them BUT the company chooses not to. but its OK for PTC to...

All the amtrak F40s had dynamic brakes. Its not just for long downhills on freight, it can be used in the same manner for passenger. Mostly, on the NEC we use them for making high speed station stops to save on brake shoe wear and not piss the air away making a lot of on and off with the automatic b...

Beware of the adjustment pegs, people have been cranking them down too hard. it blows the gaskets out. Back them out some. till its easy to close. If you hear window noise when you are moving fast, its probably actualyl the door not the window. pull the handle up. Do not crank those pegs down too ha...
