I just read the Railway Age article. I expected that things would go badly under EHH but I didn't think it would be that bad. It is sickening, almost a rerun of the black days of Penn Central. I better unload my CSX stock while I still can.
Continimg a bad week for Amtrak, Does anybody know why: #42 (16th) westbound Pennsylvanian lost 2' 45" from Tyrone to Altoona; and why Actually that was train #43. During a violent thunderstorm a few miles west of Tyrone the engine suffered complete failure. Two NS engines were summoned from A...

Thiells was the location of the NY state institution called "Letchworth Village Home for the Feeble Minded and Epileptics ." It was formed in 1907 and closed in 1996. Coal was brought in to run the facility. I believe the last railroad use was about 1972. Beyond this to Haverstraw was aban...
A bit of irony since RJ Corman used to have a wreck cleanup crew based about 1/4 mile from the wreck location. The pulled out years ago because there wasn't enough demand for their services. Preliminary reports are that some non rail workers fouled the track with a backhoe or crane of some sort.
I attended the meeting in Goshen today. At Campbell Hall the NS/M&NJ freight yard will remain the same. The new MN yard will be south of the main on what is now farmland. After the presentation I spoke with one of the MN representatives. He essentially said that the reason that the yard will be ...
I just received an advertisement email today from RG Scenic indicating that they have trips starting Memorial Day weekend. Their website shows a full schedule.
Did any of you videotape the line on your trip? I would love to see that.
The Campbell Hall yard is used entirely for freight service now. It would have to be expanded considerably to service passenger trains. There was a proposal to start trains in Walden and have them go via CH, but I would be very surprised to see that happen.
It is very hard to make money on passengers, UNLESS volunteers are used for many of the jobs. Possibly a few paid employees in key positions, such as engine and track upkeep. But to have everyone paid is very difficult. I help with an all volunteer tourist RR and we are doing OK, especially with pol...
I would suggest a full or partly volunteer operation, like Catskill Mountain RR or Adirondack Scenic. The county or state would have to help with track upkeep on so long a piece of track, but at least some ticket and or trains crews could be unpaid. I think there would be people from the Capital Dis...
I really enjoyed your slide show and the links. Its amazing that some of thesee trolley-interurban lines were so well built. A lot of them found later use as rights of way for power lines. I think the Albany to Hudson interurban ROW is preserved like this.
""Canals and Railroads of the Mid-Atlantic States, 1800-1860" by Christopher T Baer has a list of all railroads built during that period. Also listed are "tramroads", probably animal powered. Medina & Darien RR Co is among them. Incorporated May 15, 1834, completed Sept....
Actually that is the NY & Portchester RR bridge.
