To return to the original question of mileposts on the LV, there are several on display at the Medina RR museum. I wrote to Mr. Martin Phelps, executive director of the museum, about them. His reply was that the regular mileposts were diamond shaped. Ones that were square shaped were bridge markers....

Not directly related to New York state, but indicative of the mindset of the elitists is a battle now raging over a bill which would allow mountain bikes in wilderness areas. Just Google "Wilderness Society" and "mountain bikes" and see what you find.

Say what you want about turbos and other high speed trains that are no longer with us, but as someone who appreciates scenery, I loved them because they had great panoramic windows. At least that's my recollection. I hate Amfleet cars with their tiny slits for windows. While they were running I had ...

Has there been a passenger train to Troy since early 1958? Lot of potential for college students.

Very well done! You might note somewhere that the Mohawk & Hudson originally had incline planes which required extensive relocation.

Does anyone know what ever happened to the "Lion Gardiner" passenger car which used to be stored on the Catskill Mountain Railroad? Supposedly it was sold to Iowa Pacific and destined for some place in the midwest. Was it ever restored? It is in rather poor shape on the CMRR.

Nobody ever mentions the fact that a New York ballot proposition would create many new bike trails in the Adirondacks, if approved. If they are serious about bike trails, shouldn't the trail people devote their energies to the passage of said proposition, instead of trying to destroy the railroad? h...

Breakneck Ridge MN station will close by years end and the layout redone. Apparently there is too much foot traffic crossing the road from the station and also the trail has been degraded from overuse. WHY IS BREAKNECK CLOSING? Perhaps this will give Rail Explorers another chance to revive their popular rail-bike operation. They failed to get going in the Catskills this year.

This from Clark Johnson, owner of the car Caritas. The Convention train has, due to issues with the CP, been altered significantly. Gone is the Saratoga Springs layover and the lower portion of the Vermont Railway route. Replacing these is a trip to Watkins Glen on the Finger Lakes RR and Bellows Fa...

I have heard that there is a rail-bike tour from North Creek northward. But I looked on the Rail Explorers website and saw nothing about it there. They were the ones who operated between Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake last year. Does anyone know who is operating these rail bikes on the S&NC, or an...

The state has all sorts of recreational attractions which are potentially hazardous, such as hiking and bike trails, ski areas, swimming areas. The list is almost endless. The bridge is strong enough to support 10,000 ton trains. It should be able to withstand foot traffic for a long time, baring to...
