Looking at the list of railroads on the 2019 New York rail map, I discovered some that I had never heard of and wondered if any of you could provide some insight on them. Reporting marks shown first: BHR Brookhaven Rail LLC (on Long Island), NBR Northern & Bergen Railroad LLC.

I used to work for the West Point utilities dept. (water and wastewater). The proposed tunnel location was on the Camp Buckner property. Not too far from route 293 was the start of a horizontal bore. It wasn't very wide or high. My guess was that the company started it to show investors that work wa...

There are some pictures of the big concrete trestle, but they don't do it justice. When the leaves are off it is really impressive. And very scary since it is so steep. Years ago I crawled up it, but when it came time to go back down, I chickened out and bypassed it even though that meant clambering...

Iowa Pacific in Columbia, South America

Strange postscript to Iowa Pacific story. The link below mentions Iowa Pacific involvement in an effort to rebuild the railways in the nation of Columbia in 2014. The rebuilding continues but no mention of I P now https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/news/cs-america/single-view/view/colombian-railway...

Yesterday (Wednesday) while on the train from Penn station, NY into Jersey, I could see an unusual NS engine in the ex-Erie Croxton yard. It had a bright red front and the back had what looked like a white ladder horizontal on a black background. It was too far away to get a number. Can anyone ident...

Would it be advisable to make a reservation beforehand? I don't know how popular these hi rail trips are.

On both New Years day and Thursday, the trains I saw in Campbell Hall all had a cab car followed by the engine, followed by the rest of the train. Is this something to do with Positive train control? I had never seen anything like it on this line.

The practical aspect of this is that M&NJ will probably operate all its service out of Campbell Hall instead of having one engine stationed in Middletown as is done now. NS will probably never go west of CH now. I believe that M&NJ now has its engines equipped with PTC.

In the New Jersey railfan section, I noticed that the two E8s which I believe will power the Toys for Tots train were in an NS train traveling toward Suffern. Have they or will they be moved over the Southern Tier line to Binghamton?

Never underestimate NIMBYs. They will chain themselves to the tracks rather than allow a train with trash through their town, even it is their own trash.

Very good and comprehensive articles. I did not see mention of the beet sugar factory which operated in King's Lynn between 1927 and 1994. I imagine that it had rail service. Will it be covered in another installment?

I had an interesting conversation with a Buffalo Southern employee about the NY&LE situation. He said that there was currently no freight traffic to it. There had been up to 400 freight cars stored on the line beyond South Dayton, but that they were being removed and were either all gone or near...

In the old days, a prime spot for a hobo camp was any place where a train would have to stop or slow down such as a passing siding or signal, or a steep grade. Also leaving a freight yard as a train was just starting to pick up speed. People sometimes romanticise hobos but there have always been som...
