For my HO scale locomotive fleet I need to figure out the Horn, bell and light locations. I have a SD45 head on photo below for reference. In the middle of the short hood there would be the bell. (Chicago and Northwestern style) Above the number boards there would 4 lights. (a red and green one on either side) The green goes on when the locomotive is moving and the red when the locmotive is running, but not moving. Another feature would be having one head light working, but the other one coming on if the first burns out. Lastly would having the ditch lights as high as the classification lights be legal?

Ditch lights need to be on the pilot. Federal regulations say that there has to be s certain size triangle beteen the ditch lights and the headlight. As for headlights either nose or cab location is mechanical dept discression. Santa Fe changed to nose mounted headlights. After the merger the BN units started to have headlights moved to the nose. Horns have been moved away from the cab in recent times to try to make the cabs quieter. Many crews have gotten hearing problems due to excessive noise in cabs.

Bells can be mounted under the farme, on the side of the long hood, on the nose of eather hood, or on top of the hood.
