Around here on Pan Am I have seen spacer cars between CO2 tankers but not between other tankers such as alcohol or chemicals. What loads require a spacer between the engine and freight??

For the most part ALL hazmat loads require at least 1 buffer car. More common is 5 buffers unless it's a unit train (alcohol for example) then they usually only get 1. here is a link to pdf. on page 30 it give you an idea of what needs a buffer and how many. http://boe.aar.com/boe/download/US_HMI_Final%202008.pdf
