In terms of modern landmarks and roads, where did the WWII wreck of the Lackawanna Limited take place in Wayland, NY? Thanks for your help--I'm having trouble imagining the location in relation to the Wayland station and furniture plant.

OK, so is the station visible from Rt. 21 near the Gunlocke plant the DL&W station and, if so, is that the location where the DL&W main crossed Rt. 21? Was the crash, then, close to the Rt 21 crossing? Sorry for the confusion, but the 1904 USGS map doesn't seem to be accurate with regard to the rail locations in 1943 and I'm having trouble relating the old maps to newer ones--I thought the DL&W main was further south of the town. Thanks for your help!

Map this location:

42.5526650952052 N
-77.59362459182739 W

That's where the Lackawanna crossed Rt. 21/15. Station is just to the East on S. Lackawanna St. and WSW of Gunlocke.

The crash occurred where a switcher had not cleared the switch from a siding near the station.

Having grown up in Wayland in the '50's IIRC the switch that the freight fouled was about 1/4 of a mile west of the station, just before the mainline tracks curved to the left. You can read the complete ICC accident report here: http://dotlibrary1.specialcollection.ne ... _railroads. Select 1943 & search for file # 2725.
