What's the conflict over whether to use the switch at 84 lumber or not?
Also, what's the future of the switch for Synergy gas?
Was the switch at Southampton Lumber ever used?
84 Lumber contracted with the railroad to have the switch installed. Riverhead Building Supply has huge political influence in Town of Riverhead politics, and thus the Town insisted that 84 Lumber pay a huge building permit fee to install the siding onto their own property. This is of course a violation of Interstate Commerce rules, but to fight it would cost a fortune, much more than to just pay the fee. Out of spite, 84 Lumber (and justifiably so) will not pay the Town of Riverhead one dime for the permit, so the switch sits useless.
Similar situation at Synergy Gas. They had the switch put in, and when the Town (of Brookhaven this time) found out, they passed some type of ordinance banning deliveries of Propane via rail. As far as I know, the switch never was used to deliver propane cars. It was occasionally used to hide a car or two, but that's it. It's since been disconnected from Synergy, and the rails straightened for use by Winters Brothers. Don't know if anything more was done to it than that.
Southampton Lumber never saw service under NYAR days.
