Uncertain economic times and falling tax revenue might mean reduced funding from the Metropolitan Transit Authority and Connecticut for improvements on Metro-North, railroad President Howard Permut told a commuter group.

That could mean not adding trains, not allowing passengers to use credit cards to buy tickets on trains, and not adopting a system that would provide schedule and delay information on the Internet or a BlackBerry, Permut said.

"We're in hard financial times," Permut told members of the Connecticut Commuter Rail Council. "It's true in New York, it's true in Connecticut, and it's true everywhere. I'm not happy but we've been down this road before, and we'll do the best we can with the resources we have to provide the best service we can."

Permut spoke at a council meeting Wednesday night at MTA headquarters on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, his first meeting with the council since he replaced Peter Cannito as head of the railroad.

The on board credit card sales was supposed to increase revenues. This was an odd comment of services that were hyped for months. How would someone go about finding information of on board sales before and after the electronic ticket machines? Sorry about hijacking thread.
