Why did the NY & A stop running to the public delivery track in Southold ??
Because it cost more to deliver the car to Southold (diesel fuel, crew overtime, mileage paid to LIRR, etc.) than it took in via revenue. The customer was offered to have the service continued, but they would have to pay the difference. They chose not to receive cars anymore. Also Penny Lumber was sold to Marjam Supply, which already receives cars in Farmingdale. So the lumber is trucked from there.
The irony here being that last summer when a number of grade crossings were rebuilt east of Riverhead, the Youngs Avenue crossing in Southold had the lead track
to the delivery track rebuilt, including the crossing with concrete ties no less.
If the track is there, the crossing must be maintained. Since they already have a large supply of concrete crossings, that's what they used. They will stand up better to road traffic than the rubber ones anyway.
