I thought Paddington was electric for western services, so a bit puzzled as to why it doesn't use catenary for part of the journey.

None of the stations this train travelled to are under catenary; nor do they have third rail electrification.

Yes, I misread the article, thinking they were in service between the mentioned stations and Paddington station.
Though I would say the reading depot would have catenary.
