LIRR/MNRR Sunnyside Station Status (Sunnyside Amtrak Yards)
This forum will be for issues that don't belong specifically to one NYC area transit agency, but several. For instance, intra-MTA proposals or MTA-wide issues, which may involve both Metro-North Railroad (MNRR) and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Other intra-agency examples: through running such as the now discontinued MNRR-NJT Meadowlands special. Topics which only concern one operating agency should remain in their respective forums.

A while back there were plans for a Sunnyside Station as part of east side acess was curious as to the current status of this project. With Long Island City experiencing a lot of residential and commercial construction seems like this station would get alot of usage.
Don't hold your breath for that one. Amtrak has already stated that it will not stop there. It serves no purpose for ESA and Hunter's Point is nearby. It is also off of the list of scheduled ESA work.
Now only if we'd improve Hunterspoint Avenue station.
I didn't get into teaching for the promotions or the pension plans or so I could get to the golf course by 3:45. I did it because I wanted to help you kids. I'd forgotten that, till today. -- Principal Peter Prickly.
Hunterspoint and LIC are stub stations with no Manhattan access - to points east only. Hunterspoint is planned to be eliminated with ESA completion as its prime purpose is a transfer station to the 7 for commuters heading to Grand Central and East Side.
LIC station is close to a ferry terminal and the whole area is being developed with high rises on the riverfront.
Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.

Seems a bit shortsighted to eliminate HP unless diesels bound for it stop at Woodside, or a transfer is made from Vernon-Jackson Ave to LIC, especially considering Diesels cannot operate to GCT.

Diesel passengers headed for East Side could walk across the platform at Jamaica to a ESA/Grand Central train.

I've never heard of this planned closure of HPA & LIC. Is this in their planning docs somewhere we can reference?
Sunnyside is a huge lost opportunity. LIC is it's own mini-manhattan now.
On a slightly different subject - plans to deck over the yard are on long term hold and not going to happen in our lifetimes. Everyone in Sunnyside is 100% against it because the EDC can't answer how all those new residents would get around, where the sewers from it would flow to (untreated into the river and newtown creek are not an option - we have enough of that around here), what power plant it would all be plugged into, etc.
Believe "Sunnyside station" was deleted from ESA as there's NO room for it.
There's no easy public access to it anyway.
Hunterspoint just had 2 new signal cabinets(CIL's) installed.

could you please link the relevant quarterly report where the deletion was mentioned (or a pair of quarterly reports which show its deletion)? I'm not sure where to find them or when it occurred.
However the Sunnyside Yard Master Plan does include two immediate priorities. One is to facilitate financing with the MTA and the city to create the Sunnyside Station over the next five to 10 years. The Sunnyside Station was designed at a high level as part of the LIRR East Side Access Final Environmental Impact Statement.

“Sunnyside Yard presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a new model for affordable housing and equitable development. With a plan that delivers a new Sunnyside station along with 12,000 affordable homes, equitable home ownership opportunities, open space, schools, and more, we are fighting for a New York New Yorkers can afford,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio in a press release.

When it comes to public transportation, the city has planned for a new Sunnyside station served by LIRR and Metro-North located along Queens Boulevard Bridge, just to the east of Queens Plaza and west of Woodside on the LIRR Main Line (with potential Amtrak service and trains from New Jersey). It also wants a new subway station and a new Bus Rapid Transit line connecting Queens and Midtown Manhattan.

Postscript: I'm going to move this over to the NYC Area forum, as it may involve MNRR, and impacts Amtrak (although I'm sure they won't stop there).
Sunnyside Station or Sunnyside Transfer as it was to be called, was to be accessed by ESA trains only. Amtrak was never involved with their trains stopping there.
