Lots of old newspapers refer to the Erie line form Cleveland as "the NYPANO". Any of you sure how that was spoken?

I admit that I'm not completely sure, but my guess is "Nye-Pa-NO".

Like many things, im sure the pronunciation was determined by the locals..
considering it hasnt officially existed in over 70 years (absorbed into the Erie in 1941)
we would need to find some 90 year old railroaders to know for sure..

Official name: New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad.
Initials: NYP&O
nickname: NYPANO for "NY, P and O"

Either "Nye-Pa-NO", as Charlie said,
or I would guess "Nip-an-oh" as being likely..
or,the shortest and quickest version to say: "Nip-uh-no"

ERIE ore dock in Cleveland was identified as "NYPANO" up until abandonment, c.1976.

FWIW, for many years the PRR line down the Delmarva Peninsula was legally the New York, Philadelphia & Norfolk, or NYP&N. The lawyers always called it the Nip-an-N.
