Anyone know which locomotive it was?

The firefighters tried to shut the locomotive’s engine off by using the emergency kill switch, but it just continued to run. They then decided to completely kill the power to the locomotive, but it still continued to run.

Finally, around 3:15 to 3:30 a.m. the engine stopped running, and they were able to put out the rest of the fire.

Nomis said U.P. employees at the scene told him the locomotive was probably a complete loss. No one was injured.

I for one do not know which unit, or which model.

But, perhaps we can have some fun with it:

Was it a GE or EMD? :P

Sounds like maybe it was running on its lube oil and not fuel oil?

If so, well the prime mover is shot, but that doesn't mean the whole loco is......

Right, but if the prime mover is shot and the locomotive has extensive fire damage, I could see them calling it a complete loss.

Depends really on where the damage is ... pretty much anything other than a compromised frame is repairable, if you want to spend the $$$.

If the frame is heat-damaged, then it's scrap ... you just can't fix that.

If you need a new frame, you need a new locomotive.

EMD has gotten pretty good at making them, too.
